I was in shocked the other day when my nihongo sensei (japanese language teacher) exclaimed “alamak!” when only 3 out of 4 of us turned up for class again. The other 2 girls seem to like taking turns to miss classes, almost like it’s telephatic LOL. Anyway i was soo astonished yet happy because I thought my sensei knew Singlish! =D (which is Singaporean-enlgish, for those who don’t know)
The term “alamak” in Singlish, according to talkingcock.com (but I guarantee the definition’s pretty accurate), is as follows (i just copied and pasted the entire chunk):
An Malay expression of dismay, surprise or alarm that has long been rumoured to mean “Allah’s mother” but more likely comes either from the Arabic “Allah Ma’ak”, meaning, “God be with you” or “Allah maaf kar” meaning “God forgive you”.
“Alamak! Why you go and do this sort of stupid thing?”
…And it turns out there is “alamak” in Japanese too! And with a similar meaning to “alamak” in Singlish. Japanese say “arama” to mean “oh my goodness”.
ARAMA, I didn’t know that! =o
HAHAHA ok sorry that was lame. xP
